Trustee David Vela has been at the forefront introducing new curriculum that matches today's job market. Improving student's experience by providing effective career counseling, resource centers, state of the art buildings and basic needs.
Trustee David Vela understands that not everyone wants to attend a four-year institution. Strengthening our Career and Technical Education programs is key.
Trustee David Vela is committed to transferring more students to U.C., Cal State and other Universities with less time and less debt.
My name is David Vela and I am a Member of the Board of Trustees for the Los Angeles Community College District, Seat 3 and I respectfully ask for your vote. I am running to continue to make community college affordable, accessible and safe for every student. Since joining the Board in 2018, I have implemented cutting edge curriculum, balanced the budget, implemented transparency measures and adhered to shared governance policies.
In just two years, I led the fight to increase student basic needs like access to computers, internet, housing, food, textbooks, financial aid and employment. During the pandemic I ensured students continued their studies on-line in just under two weeks, avoided lay-offs, continued LACCD's revitalized building program and provided students with ample time to complete requisites for transferring. Regarding race relations, I voted to implement the Board of Trustees Framework for Racial Equity and Social Justice and increase outreach and resources to African American, people of color and LGBTQ+ communities.
Many of LACCD's Colleges have high rates of transferring students to Cal State and UC. Regarding jobs and job training I partnered with the Los Angeles County Assessor's Office to train workers for the department and continued to fund the construction internship and apprenticeship programs through out the district's nine colleges.
As a Trustee, I will continue to champion key issues including:
-increasing transfer and completion rates
-student basic needs such as housing, jobs and access to food
-implementing equity plans for diverse groups including African American and LGBTQ+ students.
-introduction of new courses
My vision is to:
provide students cutting edge curriculum for today’s job market and help them obtain their educational goals quicker and with less debt.
David's belief that education is a civil right led to a passion for higher education after receiving a Bachelor's of Science and Master's Degree from L.A.'s top Universities.
